14.8.4. The basic malfunctions of the generator

THE GENERAL DATA

At generator check, and also at car operation it is necessary to observe a number of simple rules not to put the generator out of action:

  – Not to suppose work of the generator with the disconnected storage battery;
  – Not to check generator work on "spark" as thus through diodes the considerable current proceeds, and they fail;
  – Not to check diodes pressure more than 12 In or мегомметром;
  – At carrying out of electrowelding works to disconnect all wires from the generator and from the storage battery;
  – To check knots and chains of an electric equipment and to eliminate malfunctions at the idle engine and the disconnected storage battery.

THE REASON	ELIMINATION METHOD
At ignition inclusion the control lamp of gymnastics of the accumulator does not burn
Wire breakage between the generator, the lock of ignition and a control lamp	To check up pressure on a chain, beginning from the generator
The accumulator is discharged	To check up pressure and, if necessary, to charge the accumulator
The bulb has fused	If it proves to be true, to replace a bulb
Generator brushes leaky adjoin to contact rings	To check up length of brushes and freedom of their moving the holder
The winding of excitation of the generator has burnt down	To check up rotor and diodes which at detection of defects are subject to replacement
The control lamp of gymnastics of the accumulator does not die away at increase in turns of the engine
The pressure regulator has failed	To replace with the new
The wire between the generator and a control lamp has contact to weight	To replace a plait of wires or in addition to isolate a wire
The control lamp of gymnastics of the accumulator burns at the switched off ignition
Diode short circuit	To check up diodes and faulty to replace
